Why is the idea of equality such a threat to monarchy and noblity?

The reason why the monarchy and nobility found equality such a threat was because that would mean that commoners/peasants (poorer people) would have to be on the same level as the rich. And the monarchy & nobility would loose their status as rulers over the commoners. The rich did not want to share their power and wealth with peasants (The rich saw commoners as inferior.)
