How did southern and northern accents come about?

different groups of people settled into different parts of the country and when new people come they end up adopting the accent of the place they live, like in Minnesota where a bunch of people from Sweden settled they started talking english with a slightly Swedish accent and as new people moved to Minnesota they ended up talking like that.
